Reading the company · Lesson 10 of 20

Price to earnings

Divide the price by the EPS and you get how many years of current profit you are paying for the share. Twelve means twelve years. Whether that is a lot depends entirely on the industry — banks here trade near five, and a fast-growing company can be worth twenty. Compare a company with its own industry, never with the market as a whole.
